As people in the world mourn the death of Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, only a few would question openly why Jackson, a black man, later changed his skin to white. But that question has actually been asked privately by almost everyone who loves his songs.
Jackson was born black. He became a musical star when he was only 11 with his brothers. The news of his death has become front-page stories in many countries in the world. Commentaries here in the United States said his achievements in music have well surpassed Elvis Presley. Jackson was truly global and omnipresent, across genres and media platforms.
The difference between Presley and Jackson is that the former was white and the later was black. Jackson's greatest achievement, perhaps, is that blacks were finally being marketed to the mainstream in music.
The first Jackson 5 album was released in 1969 on the Motown label, which carved a place in history by making black music safe for white people to enjoy.
However, people noticed that as Jackson's fame spread wider, his appearance became whiter.
Jackson himself said he had vitiligo, a disease that produces white splotches on the skin. His supporters also defended for him, saying that his skin color had nothing to do with his race.
In 1991, his song "Black or White" was released. The lyrics of that song repeatedly assured his fans that "it don't matter if you are black or white." The song was widely explained as a way for Jackson to show he wanted to cross the race boundary and many people wondered if the song title applied to Jackson himself.
Some alleged that Jackson changed his skin color because he was ashamed of being black, but he himself had never said much to the reason why.
Those who knew him well say he always maintained his black identity. As a trailblazer for a new breed of global multimedia stars, he helped create an era in which race was a piece, rather than the definition, of a person.
"I think that Michael really, in his career, just transcended race. His work and his life was sort of about un-defining race," said Bill Bottrell, who co-produced "Black or White" and worked closely with Jackson from 1986 into the early 1990s.
"He obscured the issue, or obscured it at least as far as he was concerned, or just transcended the issue," Bottrell said.
"I watched him with his friends, they came from all walks of life. He certainly surrounded himself with lots of African Americans, also a lot of white people, including me," said Bottrell.
Reena Daruwalla questioned Jackson's intention to change his skin color in the website: When a person who has spent incalculable amounts of time, energy, effort; to say nothing of actual money in getting from Black to White, one does indeed raise the eyebrows. If it actually "Don't matter if you are black or white," why try so hard to achieve Caucasian looking facial features?
Daruwalla continued that the change in skin color may well be the result of an actual and ineluctable illness rather than something achieved by design; however admittedly repeated procedures of plastic surgeries to achieve distinctly non-African American looking nose, cheekbones, chin, brow bones, lips "does not sound like a person who is particularly unconcerned with his racial characteristics."
But some Chinese Americans who joined a discussion over a local radio program in Los Angeles held that it is understandable for Jackson to try to achieve Caucasian looking. Jackson faced tremendous pressure and hardship on his way to the King of Pop at a time when racial discrimination existed and still exists.
They said time has changed. Now Barack Obama was elected the first African American president in U.S. history, and Oprah Winfrey does not have to worry about her black skin. But 20 or 30 years ago, a person's color did matter.
It was reported that workplace discrimination based on color or skin tone is still a problem in the United States. The number of complaints filed with the U.S. courts and administrative agencies is growing.
Such unlawful conduct is predicated not on a person's specific race or nationality, but on the shade of his or her skin, often involving disputes between people of the same race and among individuals who act on cultural biases based on whether a person's skin tone is lighter or darker.

When I dream
A lifetime of worry and regret,

‘Revoke action against Katawal’
Constitutional experts on Wednesday advised Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal to revoke the Maoist-led government's decision to sack Chief of the Army Staff Rookmangud Katawal.
The prime minister had invited legal experts and senior lawyers at his office on Wednesday to seek advice on whether or not to roll back the previous administration's decision to sack the Army chief.
"All legal experts said the Maoist government's decision was illegal. They said the new government can correct the decision," a Minister who attended the meeting told the Post. The lawyers' team comprised Nepal Bar Association Chairman Bishwo Kanata Mainali, senior lawyers Radhe Shyam Adhikari, Harihar Dahal, Badri Bahadur Karki, Agni Kharel, Bhimarjun Acharya, Shambhu Thapa, Tika Ram Bhattarai, Surya Dhungel and Lalit Bahadur Basnet.
They said as the coalition partners had boycotted the Cabinet meeting and rejected the Maoist proposal, the Pushpa Kamal Dahal-led government had turned into minority one when it decided to sack Katawal. They added that the decision was unconstitutional as it was unilaterally taken and was not implemented through the recommendation of Prime Minister. The Cabinet meeting scheduled for Thurdsay is likely to endorse the President's move to reinstate the Army chief.

Sydney is Australia's biggest, oldest and most exciting city - and one of the great seaports of the world. It is also the nation's most popular tourist destination.
Founded just over 200 years ago as a British penal settlement, Sydney has grown rapidly to become a glamorous international city boasting the best the world has to offer. The city now embraces a rich multicultural community that totals almost four million people.
Sydney, the capital of the Australian State of New South Wales, is a safe, fresh, friendly destination with a warm, sunny climate that makes a visit perfect in any season. In fact, at least 240 days of sunshine a year means your visit will be as bright as the sparkling, ever-visible harbour.
Sydney's magnificent harbour is clearly the focal point of Sydney's appeal and the relaxed, outdoor lifestyle of its fortunate residents.
Each day and night, visitors and residents alike board cruise boats, commuter ferries, and sailing boats to enjoy the harbour's incredible beauty and the unparalleled views of two of the world's most famous attractions - the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge.
The Opera House is acclaimed as the most outstanding building of the 20th century, and when you cruise past its huge billowing sails hovering above the water, you will surely agree.
After photographing the Opera House, you will join trading vessels and luxury cruise liners from around the world as you sail beneath the vast arch of the nearby Harbour Bridge, which itself provides breathtaking views of the harbour.
The wildlife at Sydney's world-class Taronga Zoo, perched high above the harbour, also enjoy fabulous vistas. A spectacular cable car ride from the fern/ wharf leads to exhibits showcasing Australia's unique wildlife, including kangaroos, cuddly koalas, emus, wombats and kookaburras, as well as the world's most exotic animals.
But the harbour view to beat all harbour views can be enjoyed from the top of Australia's highest lookout - Sydney Tower - which soars above the city's striking skyline to provide a sweeping panorama of Sydney's waterways, attractive suburbs, wide open spaces, lush gardens and Australia's famous beaches.
The most famous beach of all, just 15 minutes from downtown Sydney, is Bondi Beach where, on a hot day, more than 50,000 sun-seekers will gather to bask in the sunshine, cool off in the crystal-clear surf and enjoy a colorful selection of beach- side cafes.
But you don't need a hot day for an excuse to swim at Sydney's great beaches. The ideal climate makes swimming possible all year round.
Another popular trip is by ferry or high-speed jet-cat from Circular Quay in the city centre, past forested headlands, and on to the pretty seaside suburb of Manly, another favorite playground for Sydneysiders. Here, you will find big uncrowded beaches, lively promenades, even more lively outdoor entertainment and restaurants offering cuisine from every corner of the globe.
Sydney boasts a diverse ethnic population, with people from around 160 countries now peacefully settled throughout the city. This has created a rich and colorful lifestyle envied around the world......

'Nepalese students involved in sex trade in Australia'
As large number of Nepali students flocked to Australia, reports said many of such students were suspected of being involved in sex trade.
Nepali Embassy in Australia recently wrote to foreign and finance ministries suspecting that girl students from Nepal were involved in flesh trade to meet their cost of living in Australia, reported the Annapurna Post daily.
In the letter Nepalese ambassador to Australia Yogendra Dhakal, has urged the government to take this issue seriously, as it could take a worse turn in the wake of the global financial crisis.
In the letter, the embassy has suggested the government to bring regulations for education consultancies in Nepal, orient Nepali students properly and ensure that they have funds required for the completion of studies in Australia before giving a no objection letter.
According to the embassy, there are about 17,000 Nepalese students in Australia. Hundreds of people who were working in good positions in Nepal have also gone to Australia seeking diploma in different courses in the pursuit of PR, said the report referring the letter.

ALWAYS FOR THE FIRST TIME.....**
Always for the first time
Hardly do I know you by sight
You return at some hour of the night to a house at an angle to my window
A wholly imaginary house
It is there that from one second to the next
In the inviolate darkness
I anticipate once more the fascinating rift occurring
The one and only rift
In the facade and in my heart
The closer I come to you
In reality
The more the key sings at the door of the unknown room
Where you appear alone before me
At first you coalesce entirely with the brightness
The elusive angle of a curtain
It's a field of jasmine I gazed upon at dawn on a road in the vicinity of Grasse
With the diagonal slant of its girls picking
Behind them the dark falling wing of the plants stripped bare
Before them a T-square of dazzling light
The curtain invisibly raised
In a frenzy all the flowers swarm back in
It is you at grips with that too long hour never dim enough until sleep
You as though you could be
The same except that I shall perhaps never meet you
You pretend not to know I am watching you
Marvelously I am no longer sure you know
You idleness brings tears to my eyes
A swarm of interpretations surrounds each of your gestures
It's a honeydew hunt
There are rocking chairs on a deck there are branches that may well scratch you in the forest
There are in a shop window in the rue Notre-Dame-de-Lorette
Two lovely crossed legs caught in long stockings
Flaring out in the center of a great white clover
There is a silken ladder rolled out over the ivy
There is
By my leaning over the precipice
Of your presence and your absence in hopeless fusion
My finding the secret
Of loving you
Always for the first time.
When I See..........
When I see the flowers blooming
I want to enjoy and keep smiling
But I am frightened at the same time
That it will wither away in the course of time
When I see the poor people laughing
I want to sit and laugh with them
But I am frightened at the same time
That it may not last for a long time.
When I see someone dancing and joking
I want to dance and joke with them
But I am frightened at the same time
That their enjoyment must end after some time
When I see the drops of rain on the ground
I want to swim in that beautiful lake
But I am frightened at the same time
That it will dry away after some time.
When I see Cattle grazing around
I want to keep on looking leaving my work behind
But i was frightened at the same time
That they must return to their shed after some time.
When I think of all those things
I feel that I have started to understand life,
It’s strange period of time when,
Happy and sad moments come like two sides of a coin......
